When to plant Chilli Pepper Seeds

Chilli pepper seeds are best planted in early spring (February to April) indoors, as they require warmth to germinate. Start seeds in seed trays or pots 8-10 weeks before the last expected frost. Once the seedlings are established and the weather has warmed up, they can be transplanted outdoors, usually after mid-May, when the risk of frost has passed.

How to Plant Chilli Pepper Seeds

Sow chilli pepper seeds in a well-draining seed compost, filling a seed tray or small pots. Plant seeds about 1-2cm deep and lightly cover with compost. Keep the seeds warm (around 20-25°C) and place them in a bright spot, such as a windowsill or heated propagator. Keep the soil moist but not soggy, and once the seedlings have grown large enough to handle, transplant them into larger pots or directly into the garden, spacing them around 30-45cm apart.

How long do Chilli Pepper Seeds take to grow?

Chilli peppers typically take 7-14 days to germinate, depending on the temperature. Once the seedlings are established, they can take 60-90 days to mature, depending on the variety. Chilli peppers thrive in warm conditions, and it can take around 3-4 months from planting to harvesting, with the peppers ripening throughout the summer and early autumn.
