When to sow Nigella Seeds

Nigella seeds are best sown directly outdoors from March to May where they are to flower. For earlier blooms the following year, seeds can also be sown in early autumn. Nigella dislikes root disturbance, so direct sowing is generally recommended.

How to grow Nigella from seed

Sow nigella seeds thinly in well-prepared soil and lightly cover with a fine layer of soil. Choose a sunny position with well-drained soil and keep the area lightly watered while seedlings establish. Thin young plants if necessary to allow good spacing and airflow. Nigella is easy to grow and requires very little maintenance once established.

How long does it take for Nigella to flower?

Nigella typically flowers from early to mid-summer, depending on the sowing date. Its delicate blooms are followed by attractive decorative seed pods that are often used in dried flower arrangements.

Why grow Nigella from seed?

Growing nigella from seed is an inexpensive and rewarding way to add colour, texture and interest to borders and wildlife-friendly gardens. The flowers attract pollinators, while the distinctive seed heads provide ornamental value long after the blooms have faded. Nigella also self-seeds readily, creating naturalistic displays year after year.

Where can you grow Nigella?

Nigella is ideal for cottage gardens, wildlife gardens, cutting gardens, wildflower areas and mixed borders. It thrives in a sunny position and well-drained soil, where its finely divided foliage and delicate flowers combine beautifully with other summer-flowering plants.

Which Nigella variety should I choose?

The best nigella variety depends on your preferred colour scheme and planting style. All varieties develop attractive seed pods that add further interest to garden displays and floral arrangements.
