Take a look at some of the frequently asked questions we receive from those looking to buy Oregano Plants in the UK. You can contact our Customer Service Team or browse our general FAQs for further advice.
Oregano plants are best planted in the spring, from March to May, once the risk of frost has passed. They thrive in warm weather and require well-drained soil to establish strong roots. If growing from seed, start them indoors in early spring and transplant them outdoors when temperatures consistently stay above 10°C.
Oregano prefers a sunny location with well-drained, light soil. Before planting, mix in some compost or grit to improve drainage, especially in heavier soils. Space plants about 30cm apart to allow for healthy air circulation. If growing in containers, choose a pot with drainage holes and use a free-draining compost mix. Water moderately and avoid overwatering, as oregano thrives in drier conditions.
Oregano plants take around 6–8 weeks to establish and start producing harvestable leaves. If grown from seed, germination occurs within 7–14 days, and young plants will be ready for their first light harvest after about 8–10 weeks. Established plants will continue to grow and spread, becoming more productive in their second year.
Oregano is a versatile, aromatic herb that enhances many dishes, particularly Mediterranean and Italian cuisine. It is rich in antioxidants and has natural antibacterial properties, making it a beneficial addition to any herb garden. Oregano is also easy to grow, low-maintenance, and attracts pollinators like bees to your garden.
Oregano grows well in garden beds, herb borders, rockeries, and containers. It thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained, sandy, or loamy soil. If growing indoors, place the plant on a sunny windowsill to ensure it receives plenty of light. Oregano is drought-tolerant once established, making it an excellent choice for dry or Mediterranean-style gardens.
