When to sow Lobelia Seeds

Lobelia seeds are best sown indoors in late winter or early spring. As the seeds are extremely fine, they should be sown on the surface of moist seed compost and not covered. Starting seeds early allows plants to establish well before being planted outdoors after the risk of frost has passed.

How to grow Lobelia from seed

Sow lobelia seeds thinly onto the surface of moist compost and place in a bright, warm position. Keep the compost consistently moist while the seeds germinate. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into pots or modules and grow them on before hardening off and planting outside. Lobelia grows best in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade.

How long does it take for Lobelia to flower?

Lobelia produces masses of small flowers from late spring or early summer through to autumn. Regular watering and feeding will help maintain strong flowering performance, while plants grown in containers and baskets can provide colour for many months.

Why grow Lobelia from seed?

Growing lobelia from seed is an economical way to create colourful displays in hanging baskets, window boxes, containers and borders. Lobelia is valued for its long flowering season and abundance of blooms, which are available in shades of blue, purple, white and pink. Both trailing and compact varieties are available to suit different planting styles.

Where can you grow Lobelia?

Lobelia is highly versatile and can be grown in borders, patio containers, hanging baskets, window boxes and bedding displays. It performs well in full sun or partial shade and prefers reliably moist soil, making it ideal for brightening patios, entrances and garden edges throughout summer.

Which Lobelia variety should I choose?

The best lobelia variety depends on where you plan to grow it. Trailing varieties are perfect for hanging baskets, window boxes and container displays, where they will spill attractively over the edges. Compact, bushy varieties are excellent for bedding schemes, borders and edging paths. Flowers are available in a range of colours, including deep blue, sky blue, purple, white and bicolour forms.
