When to sow Verbena Seeds

Verbena seeds are best sown indoors from late winter to early spring. Early sowing allows plants plenty of time to establish and produce flowers throughout summer and into autumn. Seedlings should be protected from frost and grown on before planting outdoors.

How to grow Verbena from seed

Sow verbena seeds on the surface of moist seed compost and lightly cover with a thin layer of compost or vermiculite. Place seed trays in a bright, warm location and keep the compost consistently moist during germination. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, pot them on individually and continue growing them in a frost-free environment. Harden plants off before planting outdoors after the risk of frost has passed. Most verbenas thrive in full sun and well-drained soil.

How long does it take for Verbena to flower?

Verbena plants typically begin flowering in summer and continue producing blooms well into autumn. Regular deadheading can help encourage a longer flowering season, although many modern varieties will continue blooming freely with minimal maintenance.

Why grow Verbena from seed?

Growing verbena from seed is an economical way to produce large numbers of colourful, long-flowering plants. Verbena is particularly valued for attracting bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects, making it an excellent choice for wildlife-friendly gardens. Its long flowering season also provides reliable colour throughout the summer months.

Where can you grow Verbena?

Verbena is highly versatile and can be grown in borders, cottage gardens, wildlife gardens, prairie-style planting schemes, raised beds and containers. It performs best in a sunny position with well-drained soil and is often used to add height, movement and colour to mixed planting displays.

Which Verbena variety should I choose?

The best verbena variety depends on where you plan to grow it. Flowers are commonly available in shades of purple, pink, white and lavender, providing plenty of options for different garden styles.
