What are Unusual Fruit Plants?

Unusual fruit plants are varieties that produce less commonly grown fruits, offering gardeners the opportunity to grow something a little different. These may include unusual berries, exotic fruits, heritage varieties and specialist fruiting plants that can provide unique flavours, attractive flowers and ornamental interest.

When should I plant Unusual Fruit Plants?

Container-grown unusual fruit plants can be planted at most times of the year, provided the ground is not frozen, waterlogged or excessively dry. Autumn and spring are generally the best times for planting, allowing roots to establish before periods of extreme weather.

How do I plant Unusual Fruit Plants?

Plant unusual fruit varieties in a position suited to their individual growing requirements. Most fruiting plants prefer a sunny, sheltered location with fertile, well-drained soil. Dig a planting hole slightly larger than the root ball, plant at the same depth it was growing in its pot and water thoroughly after planting.

How long do Unusual Fruit Plants take to produce fruit?

The time taken to produce fruit varies depending on the variety. Some plants may begin cropping within their first few seasons, while others require a longer period to establish before producing reliable harvests. Following the growing advice for your chosen variety will help encourage healthy growth and fruit production.

Do Unusual Fruit Plants come back every year?

Yes, many unusual fruit plants are perennial and can provide harvests year after year. With the right care, including watering, feeding and pruning where required, many varieties become increasingly productive as they mature.

Where can I grow Unusual Fruit Plants?

Unusual fruit plants can be grown in kitchen gardens, allotments, borders, wildlife gardens, raised beds and containers. Many compact varieties are particularly suitable for smaller gardens and patio spaces.

Are Unusual Fruit Plants easy to grow?

Many unusual fruit plants are easy to grow once established, particularly when planted in suitable conditions. Providing adequate sunlight, regular watering and seasonal feeding will help encourage strong growth and successful cropping.

Are Unusual Fruit Plants good for wildlife?

Many fruiting plants produce nectar-rich flowers that attract bees and other pollinating insects. Their fruits can also provide a valuable food source for birds and other garden wildlife, making them an excellent addition to wildlife-friendly gardens.

Why choose Unusual Fruit Plants?

Unusual fruit plants are a fantastic way to grow something different and expand your homegrown harvests. Combining attractive flowers, interesting fruits and rewarding harvests, they can add character, variety and conversation-worthy features to gardens of all sizes.
