Jostaberry Standard

Plant your Jostaberry Standard in full sun or partial shade in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Before planting, improve the soil with plenty of garden compost or well-rotted manure to encourage strong root development and healthy growth.

Water the plant thoroughly before planting, then dig a hole slightly wider than the pot and plant at the same depth it was growing in its container. Take care not to bury the graft union. Firm the soil gently around the roots, water well and add a sturdy stake if needed to support the clear stem while the plant establishes.

If growing in a container, choose a large, heavy pot with good drainage and use a loam-based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Keep container-grown plants well watered, especially during warm weather and while the fruit is developing.

Feed each spring with a balanced fruit fertiliser and mulch around the base with compost or well-rotted manure to help retain moisture and suppress weeds. Keep mulch clear of the stem and graft union.

Prune during winter to maintain a neat, rounded head and remove any dead, damaged or congested branches. Remove any shoots that appear from below the graft union, as these come from the rootstock rather than the Jostaberry itself.

Water regularly while the berries are swelling and protect ripening fruit with netting if birds become a problem. As the plant is self-fertile, only one Jostaberry Standard is needed to produce fruit.
