When to sow Lavender Seeds 

Lavender seeds are best sown indoors from late winter to spring. Germination can be slow and may require patience, but starting seeds early gives plants plenty of time to develop before they are planted outdoors. Lavender is a long-lived perennial that rewards gardeners with years of colour, fragrance and pollinator-friendly flowers.  

How to grow Lavender from seed 

Sow lavender seeds on the surface of moist seed compost and lightly cover with a fine layer of compost or vermiculite. Place containers in a warm, bright position and keep the compost lightly moist while seeds germinate. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, pot them on individually and grow them until established. Plant outdoors in full sun and free-draining soil, as lavender dislikes wet conditions.  

How long does it take for Lavender to flower? 

Lavender plants grown from seed may take longer to reach flowering size than purchased plants, but once established they typically produce their fragrant flower spikes from late spring through summer. Mature plants will continue flowering reliably each year when grown in suitable conditions.
