For squash plant seeds to flourish in the UK, the right location is paramount, plus they need well-draining nutrient-rich soil. But when is the best time to plant them? We suggest you stagger your planting dates to prolong your harvest throughout the season, but we recommend starting to sow the seeds in late April or early May.
Timing is key when planting squash seeds. Squash is a warm-season crop, so you should plant the seeds after the last frost date in soil that has a PH between 6.0 and 7.0.
We advise planting them in a location in full sunlight for 6-8 hours per day. Plant your seeds one inch deep, 2-3 feet apart.
Regular watering is a must. The soil in your garden or allotment should be consistently moist but not waterlogged.
Mulching can help regulate the temperature of the soil and aid in retaining moisture. If you are growing vining squash, a trellis can provide much-needed support, allowing the plants to climb. Generally, though, squash seeds are low-maintenance and need very little upkeep to thrive, making them a good choice if you're new to growing crops.
Harvesting your squash is a quick and easy process. Simply use pruning shears or scissors to cut the squash from the vine, leaving a few inches of the stem attached. Don't twist off the squash as it may damage the squash and the remaining plant.
When you buy squash seeds, you may be wondering which types will work well in your garden. Squash comes in all colours, shapes and sizes, transforming a dull garden into a space that is bursting with life.
Butternut squash seeds are suited to both small and large spaces, but if you have limited ground space, you can use vertical gardening techniques. We stock a variety of butternut squash seeds that are ideal for exhibition, growing or cooking and can be stored for months.
With its red-orange skin and sweet, nutty flavour, this winter squash is the key ingredient in tasty soups and purees. Small to medium in size, it thrives in well-drained and fertile soil and requires around 90-100 days to fully mature. If it’s a nutritious garden you want to cultivate, Potimarron seeds are an option.
Classified as a summer squash, Hunter F1 squash is an early-ripening fruit, often maturing four weeks earlier than other varieties. They are cylindrical, have a light tan colour and produce smaller fruit with a sweet, nutty flavour.
Sweet and buttery, Bush Delicata is a winter squash that has a distinctive elongated shape with cream-coloured skin with darker green stripes. Both the fruit and the skin are edible, so it makes a great value choice for home cooking.
This popular variety of winter squash has vibrant red-orange skin. Its 'mini pumpkin' size means it’s an excellent choice for a small garden. You will know squash 'Uchiki Kuri' is ready for harvest once the skin is fully developed in colour and feels tough to the touch.
This disease-resistant squash is ideal for smaller gardens due to its compact size and high yields. Loved for its sweet taste, Butterbaby squash adds a creamy consistency to soups and can be steamed, roasted or grilled.
