Harvest

Harvest
  • British-bred butternut variety with early fruit set
  • Sweet, nutty flavour, perfect for roasting, baking, and mashing
  • High-quality fruits up to 3kg, ideal for kitchen or exhibition

Squash ‘Sweetmax’ is a standout butternut variety, specially bred in the UK for quality, reliability, and flavour. Its attractively shaped fruits set early, giving them more sun to ripen fully, and ensuring dependable results even in shorter seasons.

Each plant produces up to three sizeable squashes weighing around 3kg, with a small seed cavity to minimise waste. The deep orange flesh has a sweet, nutty flavour that holds its colour beautifully when roasted, baked, or mashed, making it as versatile in the kitchen as it is rewarding in the garden.

Equally suitable for exhibition growers and home cooks, ‘Sweetmax’ combines great looks, excellent flavour, and reliable cropping for a truly impressive harvest.

How To Grow

Big, bold, and brilliantly satisfying – pumpkins and squash are one of the joys of the summer veg patch. Sow them indoors early and plant out once the soil warms, and you’ll be rewarded with vigorous plants that sprawl across the garden. They thrive in sunshine and rich soil, producing colourful, plump fruits perfect for roasting, soups, pies and even carving come autumn.

Outdoor Sowing
Sow outdoors from May, once the last frosts have passed. Choose a sunny, sheltered spot with fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost or manure. Create small mounds or planting stations to warm the soil and improve drainage. Sow 2–3 seeds per hole, 2.5cm deep, then thin to the strongest seedling. Allow 100cm between plants and 100cm between rows for space to spread.

Feeding
Before planting, dig in well-rotted manure or compost. Once plants are established and start flowering, feed every 10–14 days with a high-potash fertiliser to support strong fruit development.

Harvesting
Pumpkins and squash are ready when stems turn dry and corky. Cut fruits and leave them in the sun or on a windowsill for 10–14 days to harden skins for storage.

Companion Planting
Good companions include sweetcorn and beans, which provide shade and help deter pests, while pumpkins suppress weeds with their broad leaves.
