Garden fleece and netting FAQs

What is the purpose of garden netting?

Placing garden netting over tender plants and those that are fruiting can prevent birds and other wildlife harming your harvest. Ground and soil covers can be used to suppress weeds by cutting off sunlight and air at certain levels of your garden's surface. Garden fleece can be used for these purposes, as well as protecting plants less resistant to frost in winter.

Will garden netting protect my plants from frost?

This depends on the type of netting you use. A fine mesh netting might offer some protection from frost by trapping air in its holes. But larger grades are unlikely to prevent frost from forming. Luckily, there are plenty of options when it comes to garden fleece that can do a great job of protecting against frost.

How do I secure garden netting to the ground?

Stakes and pegs can be used to secure garden netting to the ground, but there are a few considerations. Netting that sits too close to, or on top of, your plants can harm their growth and may not serve its purpose of stopping wildlife intrusion. As well as securing netting to the ground around the edges, it's advised to use poles around your plants to keep the netting from falling too low and potentially stunting growth by restricting sunlight or air circulation.

Can rain and sunlight get through garden fleece?

Most garden fleeces will allow water, sunlight and air to pass through although this is dependent on the thickness of the material. Of course, the thicker the fleece you choose, the more protection it will offer against low temperatures, but this can limit how much light and air the plant can access.

How long can I leave garden fleece on plants?

In winter, you can leave fleece on frost-risk plants for months to protect them. Plants of Mediterranean or tropical origin such as olive trees, cannas and tree ferns can be overwintered in a layer of fleece to protect them until the last hint of frost has passed. If using fleece to protect plants from birds and insects in warmer months, be sure to remove it periodically. The warmer conditions can promote the spread of disease and faster weed growth.
