When to sow Sunflower Seeds

Sunflower seeds are best sown from April to May, either indoors or directly outdoors once the soil has warmed and the risk of frost has reduced. Starting seeds indoors can provide a head start and help protect young plants from slugs and adverse weather.

How to grow Sunflowers from seed

Sow sunflower seeds around 1-2cm deep in moist, well-drained compost or garden soil. Place them in a sunny position and keep the soil consistently moist while seedlings establish. Once young plants have developed several leaves, transplant them to their final growing position, allowing enough space between plants depending on the variety. Taller sunflowers may require staking in exposed locations.

How long does it take for Sunflowers to flower?

Most sunflowers flower from mid-summer through to early autumn, typically around 10 to 14 weeks after sowing. Flowering time varies depending on the variety and growing conditions, with dwarf varieties often flowering earlier than giant types.

Why grow Sunflowers from seed?

Growing sunflowers from seed is easy, affordable and rewarding for gardeners of all ages. Their large, cheerful blooms add height and impact to borders, while their nectar-rich flowers attract bees and other pollinating insects. As the flowers mature, the seed heads can also provide a valuable food source for birds.

Where can you grow Sunflowers?

Sunflowers thrive in borders, vegetable gardens, wildlife gardens, cutting gardens and large containers. They perform best in a sunny, sheltered position with fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Taller varieties are ideal for creating natural screens or adding height to the back of borders.

Which Sunflower variety should I choose?

The best sunflower variety depends on your available space and preferred display. Giant varieties can reach over 2m tall and create a dramatic garden feature, while dwarf varieties are ideal for pots, containers and smaller gardens. Sunflowers are available in shades of yellow, gold, orange, red and bronze, with both single-stem and multi-branching forms to choose from.
