Lupin seeds can be sown indoors in late winter and spring or directly outdoors in spring. The hard seed coat can benefit from soaking before sowing to aid germination. Lupins are hardy perennials that establish well when given a sunny position and good drainage.
Sow lupin seeds in moist seed compost and lightly cover them with compost. Keep the compost moist but not waterlogged and place pots in a bright location. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, pot them on individually and harden them off before planting outdoors. Lupins prefer full sun and well-drained soil and develop long tap roots, so they are best planted in their final position as soon as practical.
Some lupins may flower in their first year when sown early, but many plants reach their best display from the second year onwards. Established plants typically flower from late spring into early summer, and prompt deadheading can sometimes encourage a second flush of blooms later in the season.
Growing lupins from seed is a cost-effective way to produce large numbers of striking cottage-garden plants. Their tall flower spikes are available in a wide range of colours and are highly attractive to bees and other pollinators. Lupins also make excellent cut flowers and add height and structure to borders.
Lupins thrive in sunny borders, cottage gardens, wildlife gardens and informal planting schemes. They prefer a position in full sun with moist but well-drained soil. Tall varieties are particularly effective towards the back of borders, where their impressive flower spikes create a dramatic display.
The best lupin variety depends on the space available and your preferred colour scheme. Lupins are available in shades of pink, purple, blue, yellow, red, white and bicolours, allowing gardeners to create vibrant displays throughout late spring and early summer.
