Begonia seeds establish compact bedding plants suited to fertile, moisture‑retentive soil and partial shade. Their continuous blooms provide reliable ornamental value throughout summer, with strong tolerance to variable UK weather. Well suited to container production and mass bedding schemes, begonias deliver consistent form, colour and season‑long performance.

When to sow Begonia Seeds

Begonia seeds are best sown indoors from January to March, as they require a long growing season to produce flowering plants. Early sowing gives seedlings plenty of time to develop before they are planted outdoors after the danger of frost has passed.

How to grow Begonias from seed

Begonia seeds are very fine and should be sown on the surface of moist seed compost without covering them, as they need light to germinate. Place seed trays in a warm, bright location and keep the compost consistently moist but not waterlogged. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots and continue growing them on in a frost-free environment. Plant outdoors after the last frosts in fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Most bedding begonias thrive in partial shade, although some varieties will also perform well in sunnier positions.

How long does it take for Begonias to flower?

Begonias typically flower from mid-summer through to autumn, providing months of reliable colour in the garden. The exact flowering period depends on the variety and sowing date, but plants raised from seed usually bloom during their first summer if started early enough in the year.

Why grow Begonias from seed?

Growing begonias from seed is a cost-effective way to produce large numbers of plants for beds, borders, containers and hanging baskets. Seed-grown plants offer a wide choice of flower colours and foliage types, allowing gardeners to create vibrant displays throughout the summer months. Begonias are particularly valued for their long flowering season and ability to thrive in locations where many other bedding plants struggle.

Where can you grow Begonias?

Begonias are extremely versatile and can be grown in borders, containers, patio pots, window boxes and hanging baskets. Most bedding begonias perform best in partial shade or dappled shade, while many varieties also tolerate brighter conditions provided the soil remains moist. They prefer a sheltered position with fertile, well-drained soil and regular watering during dry weather.

Which Begonia variety should I choose?

The best begonia variety depends on the display you want to create. Bedding begonias are ideal for mass planting and long-lasting summer colour, while larger-flowered varieties make impressive container and patio plants. Begonias are available in a wide range of colours, including white, pink, red, orange and yellow, making them suitable for both traditional and contemporary garden schemes.
