When to sow Cosmos Seeds

Cosmos seeds can be sown indoors from March to April or sown directly outdoors after the risk of frost has passed in late spring. Starting seeds indoors can give plants a head start and result in earlier flowers.

How to grow Cosmos from seed

Sow cosmos seeds thinly in moist seed compost and lightly cover with compost or vermiculite. Keep warm until germination and provide plenty of light. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, pot them on individually and harden them off before planting outdoors after the last frosts. Cosmos grows best in full sun and moist but well-drained soil. Taller varieties may benefit from support in exposed locations.

How long does it take for Cosmos to flower?

Cosmos typically flowers from early to mid-summer and continue blooming well into autumn, often until the first frosts. Regular deadheading encourages plants to keep producing flowers over a long period.

Why grow Cosmos from seed?

Growing cosmos from seed is an easy and affordable way to fill borders and containers with colour for months on end. Their daisy-like flowers are highly attractive to bees, butterflies and other pollinators, while the long stems make excellent cut flowers for indoor arrangements. Cosmos are also easy to grow, making them a popular choice for beginners.

Where can you grow Cosmos?

Cosmos are ideal for borders, cottage gardens, wildlife gardens, cutting gardens and large containers. They thrive in a sunny position and grow well in most ordinary garden soils, provided they are not excessively wet. Their airy foliage and vibrant blooms make them perfect for adding height and movement to summer displays.

Which Cosmos variety should I choose?

The best cosmos variety depends on the effect you want to create. Tall varieties are ideal for the back of borders and cutting gardens, while compact varieties are well suited to containers and smaller spaces. Cosmos flowers are available in shades of white, pink, red, purple, orange and yellow, allowing you to create anything from soft pastel displays to bold, vibrant planting schemes.
