Some varieties have an extra helping hand too, such as pre-spaced seed tape, compact plants, disease resistance or other useful growing traits. So you can spend less time worrying about getting everything right and more time enjoying what you've grown.

Sow your Cosmos seeds indoors from March to April.

Fill a seed tray with seed compost and gently press the surface flat. Water lightly, then scatter the seeds thinly and cover them with a little compost or vermiculite, around 3mm deep.

Keep the tray somewhere warm at around 18-25°C. A propagator is ideal, or cover the tray with clear film and place it in a warm room.

When seedlings appear, remove the cling film and move to a bright position with protection from direct sunlight. Once large enough to handle, transplant 5cm apart into small pots or module trays. Maintain a minimum growing temperature of 10°C until ready for planting out.

Gradually harden off plants over 2-3 weeks before planting outdoors in a sunny position once all risk of frost has passed. Space plants 30cm apart and water regularly until established.

Water regularly, particularly during dry or warm weather. Feed throughout the flowering season and remove deadhead faded blooms to encourage even more flowers.
