When to plant Celery Seeds

Celery seeds should be started indoors in early spring (February to March), as they need a long growing season. Sow the seeds 10-12 weeks before the last expected frost. Once the seedlings are strong enough and the weather is warm enough, you can transplant them outdoors, typically after mid-May, when the risk of frost has passed.

How to Plant Celery Seeds

Sow celery seeds in small pots or seed trays filled with seed compost, placing the seeds just beneath the surface. Celery seeds require light to germinate, so do not cover them too deeply. Keep the seeds in a warm, bright spot with a temperature of around 18-20°C, and ensure the soil stays moist but not waterlogged. Once the seedlings are large enough and the weather warms up, transplant them into well-drained, fertile soil with plenty of sunlight, ensuring they have enough space to grow (at least 30cm apart).

How long do Celery Seeds take to grow?

Celery seeds typically germinate within 14-21 days when kept in warm, moist conditions. Celery plants take a long time to mature, often 120-150 days from sowing to harvest. While it requires patience, the reward is the ability to harvest fresh, crisp stalks of celery throughout the summer and into autumn.
