How much can I save by bulk buying compost?

The exact amount you can save by bulk buying
compost depends on how much you buy and which brand you choose. Essentially, the more you invest, the cheaper the price per bag. Much of our range is reduced by around 20% when you stock up on more than 40 bags at once.

How many compost bags do I need to bulk buy?

Our More for Less deal means you save when you shop just two bags of compost together. Depending
on the product, you can then choose to bulk buy and
save more, with bundle sizes ranging up to 75. We stock 25L-100L bags, so you'll find it easy to create combinations that exactly meet your needs.

Can I only buy compost in bulk?

Top soil helps to improve soil quality and create a solid foundation for planting. Use it to fill low spots and level lawns or nourish new gardens. Compost optimises the soil structure, creating spaces for air and water so plants can absorb key nutrients more easily. Fertilisers can be used alongside your compost to enrich the ground with concentrated
nutrients if your plants are showing signs of deficiencies.

How can I calculate how much compost I need?

Especially if you're planning a new project or working at scale rather than just refreshing your garden, it can be difficult to know how much compost to bulk buy. A rule of thumb is that 1m² of ground requires 50L of compost, spread 5 cm deep. This is a suitable amount for sandy soils and new beds. For existing beds or heavy clay soils, around half the amount is
required so your compost will go further. Beware of using too much compost as this can lead to excessively high phosphorous levels in the soil which can prevent plants from absorbing enough iron and zinc.

How long does a bag of compost last?

Bagged compost is professionally sealed to help ensure longevity. It can last in the same condition for several years if the bag is unopened, so you can banish any qualms about quality and effectiveness if you're bulk buying compost for the future. You might notice a small reduction in volume over time as materials continue to decompose, but nutrient levels will stay just as high. Keep bags completely closed while stored to avoid weed seeds getting in. When you're almost ready to use your compost, open the bag slightly to let in moisture.

Can I store an opened bag of compost?

Although quality will deteriorate over time once the bag is opened, it's worth hanging on to your leftover compost. It should continue to be effective for a year and beyond if stored correctly.

The best way to store an opened bag of compost is in a cool, dry, shady location to discourage material breakdown. Keep the bag sealed against moisture but ensure wherever
you choose to store, it is well-ventilated to avoid anaerobic composition and the associated bad smells.
