Strulch is a light-weight garden mulch made from wheat straw, designed for easy use in organic gardening. It’s naturally free from peat, making it an eco-friendly choice to help maintain healthy soil and plants. A patented process developed by Dr Geoff Whiteley at The University of Leeds, is used to ‘preserve’ the straw so that it lasts for up to two years and gives an earthy brown colour.

Strulch’s neutral pH makes it ideal for use across your garden; whether on borders, raised beds, fruit plants, or vegetable patches. It offers plenty of benefits for gardeners focused on healthy soil. Being lightweight and pH-neutral, Strulch is easy to spread and won’t upset your soil’s natural balance. It also helps lock in moisture, keeping your plants hydrated and safe from drying out.

Advice

When growing plants from seed or using small plug plants, it's best to leave some space between rows (about 6 to 10 inches) until the plants are well established. This helps prevent contact with young, delicate leaves. Additionally, leaving a clear area around the base of each plant allows air to circulate, promoting healthier growth.

Since Strulch works by blocking light, it's important to wait until your vegetable plants are well established before applying it. Once ready, spread Strulch around the plants or between rows to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture effectively.
