When to plant Beetroot Plants

The best time to plant beetroot in the UK is early spring (around March to April) once the soil has warmed up, and after the risk of frost has passed. You can also sow beetroot in late summer (around July to August) for an autumn harvest. Beetroot grows best in cool weather, so it is ideal for planting in the cooler months of the year. If sowing directly into the ground, make sure the soil temperature is at least 7°C (45°F) for optimal germination. For a continuous harvest, sow beetroot seeds every 2–3 weeks during the growing season.

How to Plant Beetroot Plants

To plant beetroot, choose a sunny spot with well-drained, fertile soil. Prepare the soil by removing weeds and adding organic matter, such as compost, to improve fertility. Sow beetroot seeds directly into the ground in early spring (March to April) or late summer (July to August), spacing the seeds about 2.5 cm (1 inch) apart in rows that are 30 cm (12 inches) apart. Plant the seeds 1–2 cm (0.5–1 inch) deep, and water well after planting. As the seedlings grow, thin them out to about 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart to give the roots enough space to develop. Keep the soil consistently moist and mulch around the plants to help retain moisture and suppress weeds. Beetroots can also be grown in containers or raised beds if you have limited space.
