Harvest
One of the most popular and reliable beetroot varieties, ‘Boltardy’ produces deep purple roots with sweet, tender flesh, best harvested at just over golf-ball size. The young leaves can also be used as a spinach substitute or added to salads. This bolt-resistant, weather-tolerant beetroot is a deserving holder of the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
How to grow
When to Plant BeetrootFor the best results, plant beetroot seeds from mid-March to July. Beetroot prefers cooler temperatures, so planting in early spring or late summer is ideal. You can also grow beetroot in succession to ensure a continuous harvest.
Preparing the SoilThe beetroot plant thrives in well-drained, fertile soil. Follow these steps to prepare your soil:
Clear the Area: Remove any weeds and debris from your garden bed.
Loosen the Soil: Use a garden fork or tiller to break up compacted soil to a depth of about 20cm.
Add Organic Matter: Mix in compost or well-rotted manure to improve soil fertility.
pH Level: Beetroot prefers a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.0). Test your soil and adjust if necessary.
Caring for Your Beetroot Plants:
Consistent care will help your beetroot plants thrive.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water deeply once a week during dry spells.
Weeding: Regularly remove weeds to reduce competition for nutrients and water.
Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch around the plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds
Guide To Plant Sizes
Plug Plants
These plug plants have been raised in their own plug tray. Well rooted and with good sized top growth, these seedlings are ready to be planted straight into their final position, no need to harden off or pot on for later planting.
Once your plug plants have been delivered, remove them immediately from their packaging. Place them in a shallow dish of water for a few minutes to soak the plug of compost. Ideally, these should be planted immediately or if not, within a day or 2 of delivery. You can keep the plug plants in a cool and well lit area, out of direct sunlight and keep the roots damp.
