When to sow Verbascum Seeds

Verbascum seeds are best sown from late winter to spring undercover, or outdoors in late spring and early summer. Many varieties are biennials or short-lived perennials, producing foliage in their first year before flowering in subsequent seasons.

How to grow Verbascum from seed

Sow verbascum seeds on the surface of moist seed compost and lightly press them into the compost, as they benefit from light for germination. Keep the compost moist but not waterlogged and place in a bright position. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots and grow them on before planting outdoors. Verbascums thrive in a sunny position with well-drained soil.

How long does it take for Verbascum to flower?

Flowering time depends on the variety. Some verbascums may flower in their first year when started early, while biennial types often flower in their second year. Most varieties bloom from late spring through summer, producing tall, elegant flower spikes that attract pollinators.

Why grow Verbascum from seed?

Growing verbascum from seed is a cost-effective way to add height, structure and long-lasting colour to borders. Their nectar-rich flowers are highly attractive to bees and other pollinating insects, making them an excellent choice for wildlife-friendly gardens. They are also highly tolerant of dry conditions once established.

Where can you grow Verbascum?

Verbascums are ideal for sunny borders, cottage gardens, gravel gardens, wildlife gardens and Mediterranean-style planting schemes. They perform best in full sun and free-draining soil, where they can develop strong root systems and produce impressive flowering spikes.

Which Verbascum variety should I choose?

The best verbascum variety depends on the effect you want to create. Taller varieties provide dramatic vertical interest towards the back of borders, while more compact types are suitable for smaller gardens and containers. Flowers are available in shades of yellow, white, pink, peach, purple and apricot, often with contrasting central markings.
