Squirrel Proof Feeders

Squirrel Proof Feeders FAQs

Take a look at some of the frequently asked questions we receive from those looking to buy Squirrel Proof Feeders in the UK. You can contact our Customer Service Team or browse our general FAQs for further advice.

What are Squirrel Proof Feeders?

Squirrel proof feeders are specially designed bird feeders that help prevent squirrels from accessing bird food. They allow wild birds to feed while protecting seed, peanuts and suet from being consumed by squirrels.

Why use a Squirrel Proof Feeder?

Squirrels can quickly empty standard bird feeders, often consuming large quantities of bird food and sometimes damaging feeders in the process. Squirrel proof feeders help reduce food loss and ensure more food is available for garden birds.

How do Squirrel Proof Feeders work?

Squirrel proof feeders use a variety of mechanisms to deter squirrels. Some feature protective cages that allow smaller birds to enter while excluding larger animals, while others use weight-activated systems that restrict access when a squirrel climbs onto the feeder.

What birds can use Squirrel Proof Feeders?

Many common garden birds can comfortably use squirrel proof feeders, including tits, finches, sparrows, robins and nuthatches. The exact species attracted will depend on the type of food offered and the style of feeder.

Can Squirrels damage bird feeders?

Yes, squirrels can chew plastic components and force their way into poorly protected feeders. Squirrel proof feeders are often made from more durable materials and designed to withstand regular visits from determined garden wildlife.

Where should I place a Squirrel Proof Feeder?

Position the feeder in an open location away from fences, walls, sheds and overhanging branches that squirrels could use to jump from. A clear space around the feeder will help maximise its effectiveness.

What food can I use in a Squirrel Proof Feeder?

Depending on the feeder type, you can use bird seed mixes, sunflower hearts, peanuts, suet products and other suitable wild bird foods. Always check the feeder specifications to ensure it is designed for the food you wish to offer.

Are Squirrel Proof Feeders easy to clean?

Yes, most squirrel proof feeders can be opened for cleaning and refilling. Regular cleaning helps maintain good hygiene and provides a healthier feeding environment for visiting birds.

Are Squirrel Proof Feeders suitable for beginners?

Absolutely. Squirrel proof feeders are easy to install and maintain, making them a practical option for anyone looking to attract and support garden birds while reducing food losses caused by squirrels.

Why choose a Squirrel Proof Feeder?

A squirrel proof feeder helps protect bird food, reduce waste and create a more reliable feeding station for wild birds. Whether you're an enthusiastic birdwatcher or simply enjoy seeing wildlife in the garden, a squirrel proof feeder can help ensure your bird food reaches its intended visitors throughout the year.
