Roses FAQs

Take a look at some of the frequently asked questions we receive from those looking to buy Roses in the UK. You can contact our Customer Service Team or browse our general FAQs for further advice.

What are Roses?

Roses are among the UK's most popular garden plants, grown for their beautiful flowers, wonderful fragrance and long flowering season. Available in a wide range of colours, sizes and forms, roses can be grown in borders, containers, walls and arches, making them suitable for almost any garden.

When should I plant Roses?

Bare root roses are best planted between autumn and early spring while dormant, avoiding periods when the ground is frozen or waterlogged. Container-grown roses can be planted throughout much of the year, although spring and autumn are generally the best times for establishment.

How do I plant Roses?

Plant roses in fertile, well-drained soil in a sunny position. Dig a generous planting hole and incorporate well-rotted organic matter into the soil. Position the rose so the graft union sits just below soil level, then backfill, firm gently and water thoroughly. Continue watering regularly while the plant establishes.

Do Roses come back every year?

Yes, roses are perennial plants that return year after year. With the correct care, including feeding, pruning and watering during dry periods, roses can provide beautiful flowers and garden interest for many years.

How long do Roses flower for?

Many modern roses are repeat flowering, producing blooms from early summer through to autumn. Regular deadheading can help encourage further flushes of flowers throughout the growing season.

Where can I grow Roses?

Roses are suitable for borders, cottage gardens, rose gardens, mixed planting schemes, patio containers and climbing structures. With such a wide range of varieties available, there are roses suited to gardens of all sizes and styles.

Which Rose should I choose?

The best rose depends on your available space and desired effect. Floribunda roses produce clusters of flowers for long-lasting colour, Hybrid Tea roses are known for their large blooms and fragrance, Climbing and Rambling roses are perfect for walls and arches, while Shrub roses provide structure, colour and excellent garden performance.

Are Roses easy to grow?

Yes, many modern roses are bred for reliability and disease resistance, making them easier than ever to grow. Providing a sunny position, annual pruning and regular feeding will help keep plants healthy and flowering well.

Are Roses good for pollinators?

Many single and semi-double rose varieties are attractive to bees and other pollinating insects, providing a valuable source of nectar and pollen during the flowering season. Some varieties also produce decorative rose hips that can benefit wildlife later in the year.

Why choose Roses?

Few garden plants can match roses for beauty, fragrance and versatility. Whether you're looking for colourful borders, fragrant cut flowers, vertical interest or a classic cottage garden display, roses offer exceptional garden performance and years of enjoyment.
