How To Grow

Leeks are a classic British vegetable, perfect for large garden plots or small raised containers. They’re versatile in the kitchen and provide harvests during quieter times of the year. With a little patience and care, leeks are simple to grow and reward you with a long cropping season.

Indoor Sowing
Fill a half seed tray with quality seed compost and lightly sprinkle seeds across the surface, ensuring they don’t overcrowd. Cover lightly, keep moist, and place in a warm spot to encourage germination. Using compost with added perlite improves drainage and prevents root rot, giving seedlings the best start.

Planting Out
When seedlings are ready, transplant into prepared soil. Plant 15cm deep, spacing plants 15cm apart with rows 30cm apart. This depth encourages long, tender white stems.

Harvesting
Young leeks can be pulled after just 2–3 weeks for use in salads, while mature plants are ready around 8 months after sowing. Harvest regularly to make space for others to grow on.

Did You Know?
A popular method is sowing leeks into tubes, which helps produce straight, white stems with excellent flavour—perfect for both the kitchen and the show bench.
