Flowering
With slender spires of striking indigo-blue flowers on dark stems, compact Salvia ‘Salvatore Blue’ adds delicate vertical interest to the front of a border. Butterflies and bees love the flowers, which keep coming all through summer if regularly deadheaded. Drought-tolerant and easy to grow, it’s perfect for sunny pots and borders.
Sow indoors
Almost fill a seed tray with pre-watered seed compost. Sow seeds thinly over the surface. Place in the warmth, around 20-25°C, keep moist but not wet and allow 2 weeks for germination.
Grow on
Keep seedlings in a light position, but shade from direct sunlight. When large enough to handle, transplant individually to 8cm pots of potting compost.
Plant out
Choose a sunny spot in any well-drained soil. Plant approximately 30cm apart.
Tips
Will self-seed readily. Deadhead if you do not want this, and also to prolong flowering. Remove spent flower spikes in spring.
How to grow
Sow seeds on to the surface of pre-watered seed compost, but don't cover them. Keep warm, around 20°C and keep moist, but not wet. Allow 1-2 weeks for germination.
