You can’t beat the taste of fresh-picked asparagus, and now you can enjoy delicious fresh-picked asparagus spears for weeks with our Asparagus Long Season Collection. These three top quality asparagus varieties have been specially selected to give you reliable harvests over a long period in spring.
The collection contains:
- Asparagus Gijnlim (5 crowns): An RHS AGM all-male variety with an exceptionally high yield of tender, tasty purple-tipped green spears.
- Asparagus ‘Greenic’ (5 crowns): One of the earliest to harvest, producing a good crop of top quality spears from mid-spring.
- Asparagus ‘Millenium’ (5 crowns): A late-harvesting variety bred in Canada, very vigorous and high-yielding, and coping well with a wide range of soil and climate conditions.
Crown Age and Bed Establishment
These crowns are 1 year old and will be in their 2nd year as you plant them this spring. Usually, an asparagus bed takes 3 years to start to be productive if planted with crowns. Best not to harvest any spears in year 1 and maybe 2. If in year 2 there are a lot of spears then the bed is productive, if only a handful, do not cut them and leave them in the ground. The reason for doing this is the energy of the plant needs to be focussed on increasing root volume and getting established, rather than energy into spear production. If you keep cutting the spears the plant will naturally want to produce more, rather than producing roots. This will in the long term produce a stronger plant and will produce heavier crops in subsequent seasons.
How you will receive your plants:
p>Selected by our team of experts and sent from our nursery, you will receive your asparagus crowns from April to May onwards in cardboard boxes with cardboard filling. These are designed to keep your plants secure and to prevent damage in transit. Can’t plant straight away?
You can keep your asparagus crowns in their wrappings for as long as 3-5 days so long as you make sure the soil around the roots is kept moist. You should aim to plant them in their final positions within 5 days.
