We have put this collection together with you in mind. Specifically selecting early, mid-season and late cropping varieties to provide you with the longest cropping time possible.
The collection contains:
Crown Age and Bed Establishment
These crowns are 1 year old and will be in their 2nd year as you plant them this spring. Usually, an asparagus bed takes 3 years to start to be productive if planted with crowns. Best not to harvest any spears in year 1 and maybe 2. If in year 2 there are a lot of spears then the bed is productive, if only a handful, do not cut them and leave them in the ground. The reason for doing this is the energy of the plant needs to be focused on increasing root volume and getting established, rather than energy into spear production. If you keep cutting the spears the plant will naturally want to produce more, rather than producing roots. This will in the long term produce a stronger plant and will produce heavier crops in subsequent seasons.
How you will receive your plants:Selected by our team of experts and sent from our nursery, you will receive your asparagus crowns from April to May onward in cardboard boxes with cardboard filling. These are designed to keep your plants secure and to prevent damage in transit. Can’t plant straight away? You can keep your asparagus crowns in their wrappings for as long as 3-5 days so long as you make sure the soil around the roots is kept moist. You should aim to plant them in their final positions within 5 days.Planting tips and hints:Click here to view our full asparagus growing guide.
How to grow
How quickly does asparagus grow?
When established, an asparagus crown – the base of the stem with all roots attached – can produce a crop for as many as 20 years. Asparagus needs two years to establish and from the third season onwards you can expect 20 to 25 succulent spears per plant.
When and where to plant:
Asparagus crowns should be planted from March into April. Asparagus plants will do best in a sunny, wind-sheltered spot. Avoid ground that’s previously had asparagus or potatoes, as this may encourage pests and diseases.
Preparing the soil for asparagus:
Asparagus can grow in any free-draining soil that has lots of fresh compost dug in, but the vegetable thrives in sandy substances that are slightly alkaline. Use a soil-testing kit to work out the pH level of your soil, adding lime if needed to make it less acidic.
How to plant asparagus:
Dig small trenches about 12inches (30cm) wide and 8inches (20cm) deep. Along the bottom of the trench, make a gap 3inches (8cm) wide for the roots to spread over.
Plant asparagus crowns 12inches (30cm) apart and cover them with only 2inches (5cm) of soil. Water and keep watered during dry conditions. Fill the trench in fully in the autumn, after the first season has finished.
Asparagus crowns can be grown in large containers, patio grow bags or gro-beds for up to five years after planting.
Guide To Plant Sizes
You will receive your asparagus crowns in paper bags and boxes. Best to remove the crowns from their packaging as soon as they arrive. Give them a dip in water immediately and then they are ready to plant. If you need to delay planting, give them a dip in water and then put somewhere cool and out of direct sunlight, like a shed, but make sure the roots remain damp until ready to be planted. We say do this within 5 days of delivery.
