How to Make
a Terracotta Bird Feeder

Make these pots and tie them with bright string to decorate trees and feeding stations in your garden.

Here’s what you’ll need:

Bird seed

Dried fruit

A small stick

An old terracotta flower pots

A plastic bowl

Ribbon or string

Lard or coconut oil

Method

Step 1.

Thread coloured string or ribbon through the hole in the bottom of the pot and then tie the ends together at the top of the pot, keep the rest of the string loose to tie the pot to the tree branch. If you’re feeling creative, you could glue on some coloured beads or buttons to the outside of the pot, or you can leave it plain.

Step 2.

Melt the lard or coconut oil over a low heat in a saucepan, then allow it to cool a little. Spoon into a bowl and then add an equal measure of bird seed and dried fruit. Mix it all together then fill your flower pots with the mixture and firm down.

Step 3.

Push in a small stick or wooden lollypop stick into the centre - this gives the little birds a perch to sit on whilst feasting on the food.

Step 4.

Place in the fridge to set for around 10 minutes.

Step 5.

Once set, you’re ready to hang the feeder in a tree or on your bird feeders.

Step 6.

Sit back, relax and enjoy watching the birds that pay your feeder a visit.
