Blackcurrant Lowberry ‘Little Black Sugar’ is perfect for pots and small spaces, ripening early in June and producing plenty of large black berries with a very sweet flavour and a pleasant hint of tartness. The berries are held in short clusters, making them very easy to pick. The strong, bushy plants have excellent resistance to downy mildew.

Planting tips and hints:

Planting in the ground: Dig a hole approximately twice as deep and 3 times as wide as the plant’s rootball. If your soil is heavy mix in a soil improver before backfilling. Place the plant in the hole so that it sits at the same level in the ground as it did in the pot. Firm the soil around the plant and water thoroughly. Water regularly in the first year after planting and in dry periods.

Planting in containers: Choose a pot with good drainage holes. Place stones or crocks (bits of broken pottery) at the bottom of the pot to stop the drainage holes clogging up. Use a good quality loam-based compost such as John Innes no 3.

Feeding and aftercare: Apply a slow-release fertiliser in late winter. Feed container grown plants with a high potash liquid fertiliser during the summer months, and water regularly. Re-pot every 2-3 years in winter.

Prune lightly in winter for the first three years, removing any weak shoots. Prune established plants in winter, removing a quarter of the branches, especially old wood or damaged shoots. Cut low down to encourage new growth from the base of the plant.
