How you will receive your plants:

Wallflowers: Selected by our team of experts and sent from our nursery, your Wallflower plants will arrive at you as garden ready multi-sown modules. Each module contains between 3 - 4 individual Wallflower plants. When they arrive plant the whole of the module. Do not attempt to separate as this will break the roots and damage the plants, stunting their growth.

How you will receive your bulbs:

Tulips: Selected by our team of experts and sent from our nursery, you will receive spring-flowering bulbs in the autumn in a breathable mesh bag. This is to keep the bulbs together in a pack that is nice and airy – perfect to keep the bulbs healthy while in transit.

Can’t plant straight away?

If you aren't able to pot your plugs up straight away then ensure they stay moist. You can place your plugs on a saucer or tray of shallow water so they are able to stay hydrated. Aim to have your plugs potted on within 3 days.

Keep your bulbs in a cool, light, and dry place and preferably hanging on a hook so that air can get to the bulbs at all angles. Ideally, you should aim to plant your bulbs within a week of receiving them, but if this is not possible, store them in a cool, dark place until you are ready to plant them.

Planting tips and hints:

Potting seedling plugs on: On arrival place your plug trays in shallow water to allow them to soak ensuring the rootballs are moist. Use the end of a pencil or a narrow dibber to gently tease your plugs out of their trays. Choose potting on pots approximately 3 inches in diameter to plant your plugs on. Fill the pots with quality potting on compost and tap down until level. Use your pencil to make a hole in the top of the compost and place your plug plant in, gently pushing around the base of the plant. Repeat this process for all of your plugs and then place them in a tray and thoroughly water with a watering can using a fine rose to prevent the compost from being displaced. Grow your plants in a cold-frame, large sunny windowsill,  or greenhouse. Water every 2-3 days and more frequently if sunny to prevent drying out.

Hardening off: Once your potted on plants reach a good size and are ready to plant out in their final location, the first step is to harden them off before moving them outdoors permanently. This involves simply placing them outdoors during the day and back undercover at night to allow them to get accustomed to the lower temperatures. Once they have been hardened off for a week your plants should be ready to plant out in their final location.

Planting in containers:
Wallflowers: Plant approximately 8-12 plants per 30cm container. Sprinkle a layer of stone or gravel in the bottom of the container to aid drainage. Use a high-quality young plant or general-purpose compost spaced evenly with enough space to allow the plants to grow. Mix in a slow-release granular fertiliser in the compost before placing the plant to provide plenty of nutrients. Water thoroughly once planted up. Continue to water every 3-5 days and don't allow the container to dry out.

Tulips: Place a layer of stones or gravel at the bottom of a large container in order to aid drainage. Fill the container with bulb compost to approximately 20cm below the rim. Place bulbs approximately 5-8cm apart ensuring the tips face up. Fill the container to about 3cm from the top of the rim making sure to firm the compost between the bulbs. Water thoroughly and place the container in a sheltered place over autumn and winter before moving into a sunny place in April.

Planting in the ground:
Wallflowers: Dig a hole approximately twice as deep and 3 times as wide as the plant, if your soil is heavy mix in general-purpose compost, horticultural sand and stone or potting grit to ensure good drainage. Gently compact the soil around the plant and water thoroughly.

Tulips: It is recommended that tulips are planted in October and November before hard frosts hit. If planted too early they may begin to grow and suffer frost damage. Planting later also reduces the risk of the bulbs being affected by viruses. Dig a hole with a trowel or a bulb planter 3 times the depth of the bulb, between 10-15cm deep. Plant bulbs approximately 15cm apart. If your soil is heavy, mix in quality bulb compost and potting grit to give them the best start. Place the bulb in the hole with the tip facing upwards, then fill the hole and compact the soil gently. Water in to moisten the soil and apply a bone meal fertiliser to encourage flowering.

Feeding and aftercare: When feeding use a liquid feed high in potash so it gets to the roots of the plant allowing them to absorb the feed.

Deadhead the tulips as soon as the flower has dropped its petals to ensure energy is sent down back into the bulb. You will be able to leave the bulbs in the ground if your soil is free-draining and sandy.
