How you will receive your plants:

Your bare root trees will arrive at your door at the right time for planting in autumn or into winter. Unpack them straight away and plant as soon as possible after delivery.

Your bare root trees will be sent out with full planting and care instructions.

Can’t plant straight away?

If you can’t plant right away, keep the roots buried under soil in cool, moist soil and lay the stems on a dry, hessian sack. We recommended you aim to plant them within seven days.

Planting tips and hints:

Before planting bare root trees, soak the roots in a bucket of cold water for a couple of hours to rehydrate them.

Plant trees into good garden soil that has been well dug and weeded; improve poor soil with compost.

Use a shovel to dig a hole wide enough to take the roots of the tree without cramping. Use a mallet to knock in a stake, positioning it slightly off centre towards the side of the hole nearest the prevailing wind (usually on the westward side of the tree). This ensures that the wind will not blow the tree onto the stake. Position the tree centrally in the planting hole with the bump on the stem (the graft union) level just above the soil surface.

Backfill with soil to cover the roots, firm in gently and water well. Add a fertiliser to the soil when backfilling.

Tie the trunk of the tree loosely to the stake. The stake should stay in place for around 12 months and can then be removed.

Feeding and aftercare:

In the first year after planting, water regularly during dry periods.
