This reliable early-cropping asparagus produces high yields of delicious asparagus spears, perfect for steaming, roasting or stir-frying. ‘Bacchus’ is an all-male asparagus variety producing plenty of thick, smooth, straight spears with good tip closure.

Unfortunately, Asparagus 'Mondeo' is no longer in stock, but we have this new variety, 'Bacchus', that is an improved replacement.

How you will receive your plants

Your asparagus crowns will arrive at your door at the right time for planting. Unpack them straight away and plant as soon as possible after delivery.

Can’t plant straight away?

If you can’t plant right away, remove the crowns from the packaging as soon as they arrive and store them in a cool, frost-free place out of direct sunlight. Make sure the roots remain moist by misting them using a fine spray bottle or dipping them in water regularly. Plant within 5-7 days.

Planting in the ground: A good asparagus bed will give you years of productive plants, so the initial preparation is well worth the time and effort spent. Dig a trench 30cm wide and 20cm deep. Fill the base of the trench with garden compost, then use the excavated soil to make a ridge inside the trench along its length, with the top of the ridge just about at ground level. Place each crown on top of the ridge with its roots draped over each side of the ridge. Space the crowns 45cm apart. Carefully backfill the trench with the rest of the excavated soil mixed with organic matter, leaving the bud tips just visible. Water in and mulch with a 5cm layer of garden compost or farmyard manure to suppress weeds.
