Description

Aster turbinellus (prairie aster) bursts into flower in late summer and autumn, producing profuse arching sprays of lavender-blue daisy flowers on bushy plants. As well as providing fantastic late colour, the abundant flowers are very popular with pollinators and ideal for cutting. Aster turbinellus grows in sun or light shade, and is drought-tolerant once established.
Sow indoors
Sow on the surface of pre-watered seed compost, in pots or trays, lightly pressing into the surface. Place in a propagator or bag at around 20°C (68F) in shade and allow 2 weeks for germination. Remove lid or bag and keep in cooler, brighter conditions after germination. If germination is poor after a few weeks, keep cold (4°C) for 4 weeks and then bring back into warmth.
Grow on
Transplant when seedlings are large enough to handle. Grow on in a sheltered spot outdoors, such as a cold frame or unheated greenhouse. Plant out Plant out in full sun in well-drained soil and water in well. Aftercare Cut back after flowering, once the foliage is dying back. Will benefit from division of established clumps every 2-3 years.
