Flowering
Despite its name, Celosia ‘Ice Cream Orange’ loves the heat, producing vibrant orange flowerplumes on bushy plants all through summer and early autumn. This compact colourful annual looks fantastic in containers and windowboxes, flowering for months.
Sow indoors
Almost fill a tray with seed compost and water carefully. Sow seeds thinly over the surface and just cover with a little more compost. Place in the warmth (20-25°C / 68-75F) and keep moist.
Grow on
Keep seedlings in a light position, but shade from direct sunlight. When lareg enough to handle, transplant 5cm (2in) apart into trays of potting compost, or individually into small (8cm / 3in) pots.
Plant out
Gradually accustom plants to outside conditions before planting out in full sun once the danger of frost has passed. Allow 25cm (10in) between plants. Plant in well-drained soil in a sunny border, or in good quality compost in containers.
Aftercare
Remove dying flowers to prolong blooming. Water well, especially in hot spells, and feed regularly in summer.
How to grow
Sow seeds on to the surface of pre-watered seed compost, but don't cover them. Keep warm, around 20°C and keep moist, but not wet. Allow 1-2 weeks for germination.
