Chaenomeles, or ornamental quince, are spiny-stemmed deciduous shrubs with small serrated leaves. Their colourful flower clusters emerge just before the leaves and continue to bloom for several months from late winter until March and April followed In late summer by fragrant fruits which can be eaten if cooked in preserves or compotes. Chaenomeles sup. 'Crimson and Gold' has vivid red flowers centred with prominent golden yellow anthers followed in late summer by yellow speckled fruit.
In borders, plant in moist, but well-drained soil, in a sunny spot for more profuse flowers and fruit. The brightly coloured flowers of Chaenomeles sup. 'Crimson and Gold' create dramatic impact and are particularly effective in a Japanese themed garden alongside evergreens and conifers and few other flowers. To maintain the form, cut back and shape after flowering, noting that the shrub will bear fewer fruit the autumn after pruning.
How you will receive your plants:
Selected by our team of experts and sent from our nursery, you will receive your plant in a 9cm pot, ready to plant out.
Can’t plant straight away?
Place in a sheltered spot and water regularly to keep the compost moist.
Dig a hole approximately twice as deep and 3 times as wide as the plant’s rootball. If your soil is heavy mix in a soil improver before backfilling. Firm the soil around the plant and water thoroughly.
Water shrubs regularly in the first year after planting and in dry periods
