Top-quality Gooseberry Easycrisp ‘Madame Sanssouci’ produces sweet juicy red fruits with an intense gooseberry flavour, easy to harvest from almost thornless plants. The plants are quick-growing and strong with shiny, leathery leaves, and have good mildew resistance.

‘Madame Sanssouci’ is a medium to late-harvesting gooseberry. The berries can be sour if picked too early, so let them ripen fully before harvesting to allow the sweetness to develop.

How To Grow

Gooseberries thrive in sunny or partially shaded locations with fertile, well-drained soil. Prepare the planting site by removing weeds and enriching the soil with organic matter, such as compost or well-rotted manure. For bare root plants, soak the roots in water for an hour before planting. Dig a hole large enough to spread the roots comfortably, and position the crown level with the soil surface. Water thoroughly after planting.

For potted plants, ensure the root ball is well-hydrated before planting. Space bushes about 1.5m apart or standards 1m apart, allowing adequate air circulation. Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring and mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune annually in late winter to encourage healthy growth and fruit production. Water regularly, especially during dry spells, and net plants if birds become a problem. Gooseberries and jostaberries are low-maintenance and productive with proper care.

Guide To Plant Sizes

Gooseberries are available as bare root plants, 9cm potted plants, and larger potted specimens. Bare root plants are supplied dormant, typically between November and March, and are ideal for planting directly in the ground during the dormant season. They establish quickly once planted.

9cm potted plants are smaller, actively growing plants perfect for container gardens or transplanting into prepared soil. Larger potted plants are well-developed and provide an instant impact, whether for borders or patio containers. These are great for gardeners seeking faster results. All sizes will grow into productive plants with the right care, yielding delicious fruit within 1–2 years of planting.
