Salad burnet is an easy-to-grow perennial herb with ferny green leaves that have a fresh cucumber flavour. The soft young foliage tastes delicious in salads, and the round magenta-red flowers are an attractive bonus in summer.

Sow outdoors

Sow in well prepared, pre-watered soil in full sun or light shade, 1cm apart in rows 30cm apart, lightly covering with a little more soil. Keep moist.

Thin

When seedlings are large enough to handle, thin to 25cm apart. Aftercare Water plants generously in dry weather.

Advice

Sow a little and often to ensure a continuous supply. Pick often and while leaves are small- older leaves have a more bitter taste.
