Onion ‘Centro’ produces a high yield of top-quality firm round onions with golden brown skins and good flavour. It stores very well over a long period.

Sow indoors

January-March: Sow thinly 1cm (1?2in) deep in clean trays or modules of firm pre-watered compost. Place in warmth 50-60°F (10-15°C) and keep moist at all times. When large enough to handle transplant 5cm (2in) apart to trays of potting compost.p>

Sow outdoors

March-April: Sow thinly into pre-watered soil 1cm (1?2in) deep, in short rows 20cm (8in) apart, directly into harvest position. Keep soil moist at all times until seedlings are established.

Plant out

April-May: Harden off before planting out into the required harvest position 15cm (6in) apart in rows 30cm (12in) apart.

Tips

Weed regularly. Harvest once the leaves turn yellow and flop over. Leave onions to dry before storing.

How To Grow

Onions are a staple crop for any home gardener and one of the most rewarding vegetables to grow from seed. Whether in large garden beds or patio containers, they thrive with just a little care. From sweet and red onions to spring onions and shallots, each type adds its own unique flavour to the kitchen. Start seeds indoors early for a strong head start and choose a sunny, well-drained spot for planting. Keep soil moist but not waterlogged for the best growth.

Indoor Sowing
Fill a half seed tray with fine-textured seed compost and lightly scatter seeds across the surface without overcrowding. Cover lightly and keep moist. A heated propagator or heat mat provides consistent warmth, encouraging quick germination and strong root growth.

Planting Out
Transplant seedlings 1cm deep, spacing 10cm between plants and 30cm between rows. Rotate crops each season to avoid soil-borne pests and diseases, and avoid planting onions or related crops (leeks, garlic, shallots) in the same spot more than once every 3–4 years.

Interplanting
Onions store well, so one sowing is usually enough. Use the spaces between rows to grow carrots, cabbages, or lettuce. Their strong scent naturally deters pests like carrot flies and aphids. Companion herbs such as mint and parsley also help keep onion flies away.
