The beautiful fronds of Japanese Lace Fern emerge yellowish-green with slender golden scales and an erect habit before turning a darker glossy green and spreading as they mature. This evergreen fern enjoys a shady spot. It can also be grown in pots. Team it with other shade lovers, such as hostas. Cut back any dead fronds in winter to encourage new ones to appear. How you will receive your ferns:

Selected by our team of experts and sent from our nursery, you will receive your fern in a pot, ready to plant out.

Can’t plant straight away?

Keep your fern in partial shade and keep the soil moist.

Planting tips and hints:

Planting in the ground: You can plant your fern at any time, as long as the ground is not frozen. Dig a hole the same size as the pot it comes in, water well and place the fern in the hole with the top of its compost level with the surface of the soil. Allow a metre between this plant and others as it will cover more ground as it grows. Water well.

Planting in containers: Fill container with good quality, moisture-retentive but free-draining compost. Make a hole that’s the same size of the pot the fern comes in, water it well and place the fern within the hole. Water again to ensure the compost is moist.

Aftercare: Cut back any dead fronds to encourage new growth. Split ferns that grow too large in spring, before new fronds unfurl.
