Potato ‘Charlotte’ is a firm favourite among home growers and is ideal for salads. Its excellent uniform shallow-eyed, long oval tubers can grow up to 50% bigger than other salad varieties. A versatile choice for the kitchen, with tender creamy-yellow flesh with a mouth-watering flavour whether hot or in salads.
These seed potatoes have been cold stored ready for planting in late summer, so that you can harvest them in time for Christmas dinner!
If you’re planting your potatoes in the ground, plant them in mid-summer so that they will be ready to harvest before the first frosts, in mild areas or sheltered gardens. For Christmas harvests, plant the seed potatoes in August, in large containers or potato grow-bags in a frost-free greenhouse.
These seed potatoes do not need chitting, as they will be planted into warm soil.
As the stems of the potato plants grow, mound up earth around them every few days to cover them up, or add a layer of compost to potatoes grown in containers or bags. This keeps light away from the developing tubers and stops them turning green and becoming poisonous.
Water regularly and feed container-grown potatoes fortnightly with a general-purpose liquid fertiliser.
Remove the foliage when it dies down in late autumn, and stop watering container-grown potatoes.
Potatoes should be ready to harvest in 12-13 weeks from planting.
Summer Planting Potaotes (Also known as Second Cropping or "Christmas")
These potatoes are specially treated through cold storage from December through to June/July without the use of any chemicals, this cold storages makes them desperate to grow in the warm summer temperatures. It's important to plant these potatoes at the optimum time whilst the days are still long to ensure they grow to their full potential. These specially treated potatoes are often referred to as "Christmas Potatoes" which is slightly misleading as they will in fact be ready to harvest in October and will not grow any larger after then. If left in the ground or containers and provided they are protected from harsh frosts they will happily keep until Christmas providing you with delicious homegrown potatoes for your Christmas dinner.
All our seed potatoes are graded to a size 35mm x 35mm to 55mm x 55mm. This means that the smallest seed potatoes in the sample will not fall through an 35mm square. This does mean there will be various sizes within the pack. More modern varieties are more equal in size but as we want to offer the more unusual and Heritage varieties, these are more variable but we will always supply the weight stated. Any harvest will depend on individual growing conditions but generally smaller potatoes will produce smaller crops and larger potatoes will produce larger crops. But for example 1kg of seed potatoes will produce the same overall harvest whether the seed potatoes are small or large.
