Description
- Stringless stalks
- Harvestable for winter puddings
- Fully UK hardy
Take advantage of rhubarb variety Victoria Rhubarb, one of the easiest varieties to grow on account of its excellent hardiness and robust nature which stands up to the variable UK climate.
Victoria produces an excellent crop of greenish sticks which are not inclined to stringiness. A fantastic culinary variety this rhubarb provides the main ingredient for excellent pies, preserves, crumbles and other heart-warming desserts during those cold winter months when Victoria is ready for harvesting until Easter time.
We recommend that you give every plant an area of 1m x 50cm (3 1/2 ft x 1 1/2ft) so that each plant has the room to grow to its full potential. A rich soil high in nutrients is also recommended. Add well-rotted manure before planting to achieve this.
How you will receive your plants:
Selected by our team of experts and sent from our nursery, you will receive your rhubarb crown carefully packaged in paper bags.
Can’t plant straight away?
If you can’t plant your rhubarb crowns straight away, store them in a cool place and keep the roots moist. We recommend you plant your crowns as soon as possible, within a couple of days of receiving them.
Planting tips and hints:
Planting in containers: We recommend you grow your rhubarb crowns on in a pot for around a month before planting out. Plant in a large pot of compost with the growing point level with the top of the compost. Water regularly but avoid waterlogging.
Planting in the ground: Plant the crown so that the top is just visible above the surface of the soil, with the roots spread out. Space crowns around 75-90cm apart. Water well after planting.
Aftercare: Water well during dry periods and feed in summer with a general purpose fertiliser. Don’t harvest any stems in the first year, and only a few stems in the second year. After the second year, harvest as needed, stopping in July to allow the plant to build up reserves for the following year.
