Harvest
A 'really sweet' potato, this classic orange root is twice as sweet as other varieties on account of its high sucrose content.
Sweet potatoes are the tubers of attractive climbing or spreading plant Ipomoea batatas with ornamental heart-shaped leaves and ‘morning-glory’ trumpet flowers, so ideal for decorating the vegetable plot while waiting for ample harvests.
If growing to scramble on the ground the leaves will suppress weeds, cutting out light and water.
Recent breeding means there’s more than one type of sweet potato available for home-growers, all varieties with their individual characteristics but all equally as nutritious. Try for yourself. Just grow them on in a sunny position – they’re half hardy so really appreciate the sun and high humidity levels to thrive.
These young plants have been grown by our experts and delivered to you with a healthy network of roots, ready for you to plant on into containers.
How To Grow
Growing sweet potato plants is straightforward, provided you give them the warmth and space they need. Start by planting the slips deeply enough to cover at least two sets of leaves, then water them thoroughly. Sweet potatoes prefer loose, well-drained soil, so adding compost or well-rotted manure can help improve soil structure.
As the plants grow, their vines will spread and cover the ground, which helps retain moisture and suppress weeds. Regular watering is important, especially during dry spells, but be careful not to over-water, as sweet potatoes are susceptible to rot. Mulching around the plants can help maintain soil moisture and keep the roots cool.
Sweet potato plants thrive in warm, sunny locations with well-drained soil. They can be grown in traditional garden beds, raised beds, or large containers, making them a flexible option for gardeners with limited space.
In cooler climates, using black plastic mulch or a cloche can help warm the soil and extend the growing season. Sweet potatoes need room to spread out, so ensure they have enough space to grow their vines. With the right care and conditions, sweet potato plants can flourish in most UK gardens, providing you with a unique and rewarding crop.
Guide To Plant Sizes
When plugs arrive, they’ll have a developed root system, stem and leaves and are mature enough to plant directly into the ground or potted on if required.
If the roots are dry, gently mist (spray water) to moisten and keep them moist for a few days, prior to potting on or planting.
