Harvest
Aubergine 'Long Purple' is a popular heritage variety, grown in Europe since the 1900s. It boasts excellent flavours and long bodied fruits with very dark purple, shiny skin. These aubergines are best eaten slightly under ripe. Remove small fruits to leave no more than 6 fruit to develop and mature.
Our grafted Aubergine 'Long Purple' gives you confidence in two ways: grafting on a strong rootstock helps ensure reliability with vigorous growth, larger yields and better disease resistance; and our choice of contrasting varieties for sweetness and taste. Enjoy a good crop of all three from mid-summer until early autumn.
Aubergines are suited to growing in a sheltered spot with plenty of sun, including on a patio in a pot.
How to grow
Upon receiving your Grafted Aubergine Plants, these should be treated like any other aubergine. They may still have their plastic grafted pegs on, these can be carefully removed before potting.
Remove the pots immediately upon receipt and give them a good water. If particularly dry, plunge them into a bucket of water until no air bubbles are seen from the compost. Keep them in a warm place and keep well-watered until ready to plant.
These plants are larger and more mature than plugs and are ready to be planted straight away but will still benefit from hardening off before their final planting.
Guide To Plant Sizes
Grafted Plants
Grafted plants are created by joining together two different plant varieties, typically by attaching the stem of one onto the root system of another. This process allows for desirable traits, such as disease resistance or better fruit production, to be combined into a single plant.
