Harvest

Harvest
  • Heavy crops of large glossy berries
  • Self-fertile – only one plant needed
  • Thornless stems for easy harvesting
  • Highly resistant to mildew
  • A cross between a blackcurrant and gooseberry

Jostaberry is a unique cross between a blackcurrant and a gooseberry, combining the best qualities of both into one productive fruit bush. Thornless stems make harvesting easy, while the large, glossy berries are packed with rich flavour and can be enjoyed fresh, frozen or used in jams, crumbles, juices and desserts.

Naturally vigorous and easy to grow, Jostaberry is self-fertile, so you only need one plant to produce reliable crops. It establishes quickly in the garden and rewards you with generous harvests year after year with very little maintenance.

Ideal for fruit gardens, allotments and kitchen gardens, Jostaberry thrives in a sunny or lightly shaded position with fertile, moisture-retentive soil. Prune annually to encourage healthy growth and abundant crops.

How To Grow

How to Grow

Jostaberries thrive in full sun or partial shade in fertile, moisture-retentive, well-drained soil. Before planting, remove any weeds and enrich the soil with plenty of garden compost or well-rotted manure to encourage strong root development and healthy growth.

Water the plant thoroughly before planting, then dig a hole slightly wider than the pot and plant at the same depth it was growing in the container. Firm the soil gently around the roots and water well.

Space bush plants around 1.5m apart and standard plants around 1m apart to allow good air circulation and plenty of room to develop. Apply a balanced fruit fertiliser each spring and mulch around the base with compost or well-rotted manure to retain moisture, suppress weeds and improve soil fertility.

Prune annually during winter by removing any dead, damaged or congested stems to maintain an open framework and encourage productive new fruiting wood. Water regularly while the berries are developing, especially during dry spells, and protect ripening fruit with netting if birds become a problem.
