  • New and rare pink onion variety
  • Arrives in breathable bags for healthy sets
  • Grow in containers or beds to suit your space

'Rosanna' gives you the prettiest of slice onion from bulbs growing on robust and reliable plants. 'Rosanna' scores high marks both in the kitchen for salads and an essential ingredient to gamey casseroles and does well for performance outdoors during the growing process.

The unusual variety gives you full and generous-sizes bulbs from late summer. Simply harvest your plants as the green leaves start to yellow and wilt whether this is from a raised planter such as a Veg Trug or directly from an allotment bed.

Pre-Rooted Sets

Grow bigger, stronger onions ready to harvest earlier in the season with our pre-rooted onion sets! Our innovative NEW format is ideal for Autumn planting and for gardeners with small plots.

Do you know why birds like to pull up your freshly planted onions, it isn't just to see your angry face! No, it is because they are after the earthworms that in turn are attracted to microbes present in the immediate area around the rooting called the Rhizosphere. Microbes feast on the proteins, sugars and dead cells created from the plants roots. However, as these are pre-rooted the birds will find them harder to pull up and should leave them alone. The microbes in turn, provide the plants with essential nutrients and so the cycle continues.

To give you a head start on the growing season, we’ve pre-rooted onion sets into plug trays. Unlike normal sets, which take several weeks to start growing after being planted, these pre-rooted plugs are already rooted and growing when you receive them, ready to plant out. They’ll establish quickly, producing bigger, stronger plants earlier than traditionally planted sets, with less risk of birds or animals pulling out the sets.

Our pre-rooted onion sets are great for gardeners with small plots who only have space for a few plants and don’t want to waste a big bag of sets. There’s no more waiting to see whether all your sets will sprout – you can already see them growing! And if you missed your chance to plant sets earlier in Autumn, these pre-rooted sets are already ahead and no time is lost.

How To Grow

Prepare your soil: Onions, Shallots, and Garlic prefer an open, sunny site and light, free-draining soil. If you have heavy soil, dig in a generous amount of grit and organic matter into the planting area to aid drainage. Avoid planting them in very heavy or freshly manured soil. Onions are sensitive to acidity, so if you have acidic soil add some Garden Lime to the area well before planting or use our Concentrated Slow-Release Onion, Garlic & Shallot Feed Granules when planting.

Planting: Both Autumn and Spring varieties can be planted straight out into your pre-prepared soil. Loosen soil and dig in some of our Concentrated Slow-Release Feed Granules to add essential nutrients for optimal growth.

Onion & Shallot Sets: Plant Onion and Shallot sets (pointed end upwards) with the tips of the sets showing at the soil surface.

Onions: These should be spaced 5-10cm (2-4in) apart with 25-30cm (10in to 1ft) between rows.

Shallots: Should be spaced 15-20cm (6-8in) with 30-45cm (1ft to 18in) between rows.

Garlic: The Bulbs should be separated into individual cloves and planted pointed end up, so that the tip of each clove is 2cm (1/2in) below the soil surface. Leave 15cm (6in) between individual cloves and 30cm (12in) between the rows. We also recommend covering garlic bulbs in Horticultural Fleece to protect emerging shoots from hungry birds!

Guide To Plant Sizes

We have hand planted these sets/cloves into the cells to start the growing process off. These are now all rooting nicely and many will have the green shoots emerging from the top of the set/cloves. Don’t worry if some aren’t showing yet, they will. As soon as you can, take them out of the packaging and give them a good water. If you cant plant them straight away, put them in the garden somewhere out of direct sunlight and strong winds, keep them moist until they are ready to be planted. In every cell there will be 1 set/clove, once you remove the plug from the tray, just ease these apart, be careful not to break too many roots. But they will re-produce a lot more roots once planted.
