Harvest

Harvest
  • Orange-speckled white mini-pumpkins
  • Delicious sweet flesh
  • Compact plants, good for smaller plots
  • Stores well

Pumpkin ‘Sweet Lightning’ is a fantastic winter squash producing small but perfectly formed mini-pumpkins around 11cm in diametre with orange-speckled white skin. The sweet flesh is delicious roasted and added to winter soups and stews.

The compact plants are ideal for smaller vegetable plots and the pumpkins will store well for several months.

Sow indoors

March-May: Sow 4cm (1 1⁄2in) deep in individual pots of pre-watered compost. Place in warmth 15-18°C (60-65°F). Keep soil moist at all times.

Sow outdoors

June: Sow 4cm (1 1⁄2in) deep in firm pre-watered compost. Keep soil moist at all times.

Plant out

May-June: Harden off young plants, leaving the strongest to mature, before planting out in the required harvest position 90cm (36in) apart when risk of frost has passed.

Tips

Water well and feed regularly with a liquid fertiliser once the fruits start to swell.

How To Grow

Big, bold, and brilliantly satisfying – pumpkins and squash are one of the joys of the summer veg patch. Sow them indoors early and plant out once the soil warms, and you’ll be rewarded with vigorous plants that sprawl across the garden. They thrive in sunshine and rich soil, producing colourful, plump fruits perfect for roasting, soups, pies and even carving come autumn.

Outdoor Sowing
Sow outdoors from May, once the last frosts have passed. Choose a sunny, sheltered spot with fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost or manure. Create small mounds or planting stations to warm the soil and improve drainage. Sow 2–3 seeds per hole, 2.5cm deep, then thin to the strongest seedling. Allow 100cm between plants and 100cm between rows for space to spread.

Feeding
Before planting, dig in well-rotted manure or compost. Once plants are established and start flowering, feed every 10–14 days with a high-potash fertiliser to support strong fruit development.

Harvesting
Pumpkins and squash are ready when stems turn dry and corky. Cut fruits and leave them in the sun or on a windowsill for 10–14 days to harden skins for storage.

Companion Planting
Good companions include sweetcorn and beans, which provide shade and help deter pests, while pumpkins suppress weeds with their broad leaves.
