Flowering

Flowering
  • Starry white flowers in spring
  • Purple-black berries are very popular with birds
  • Beautiful autumn colour
  • Shrubby tree ideal for smaller gardens

Looking good from spring to autumn, Amelanchier canadensis is an elegant shrubby tree ideal for a small garden. Sprays of lightly scented starry white flowers appear in spring just before the new leaves, which are bronze-tinged when young. The flowers are followed by small purple-black berries which are very popular with birds, and in autumn, the leaves turn brilliant shades of orange and red. A tough, hardy and low-maintenance shrub that will grow in a range of conditions.

How To Grow

  • Plant in full sun to partial shade in well-drained, acidic soil.
  • Water regularly, especially in the first growing season to establish strong roots.
  • Prune after flowering to shape and remove any dead or crossing branches.
  • Mulch annually to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  • To grow Amelanchier canadensis, or serviceberry, choose a spot with full sun to partial shade and well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Plant at the same depth as it was in the container and water thoroughly to settle the soil. Maintain regular watering during its first year for strong root development, especially in dry periods. After flowering in late spring, prune to shape and remove any dead or crossing branches. An annual layer of mulch will help retain soil moisture and reduce weed growth. Fertilise lightly in spring to support vibrant blooms and fruit production.

    Guide To Plant Sizes

Our ornamental trees arrive either as potted plants or bare-root trees, carefully selected for your garden. Here’s what to expect:

Potted Trees: Your tree will arrive potted, ready for planting. If you can't plant immediately, place the pot outdoors in a sheltered spot and water regularly to keep the soil moist.

Bare-Root Trees: Delivered during autumn or winter when ready for planting. If planting is delayed, keep the roots moist by covering them in soil in a cool location. Aim to plant within seven days of delivery.

    Planting Tips:

    • In-Ground: Dig a hole slightly larger than the rootball. Place the tree at the same level it was in the pot or with the graft union just above the soil for bare roots. Backfill, add soil improver, firm in, and water well.
    • In Containers: Use a pot with drainage holes, layering stones at the bottom. Fill with quality compost, plant, and water well.

Seasonal Care: Plant hardy trees throughout the year, avoiding extremes. During winter, plants may arrive dormant or bare-root with no leaves. This is normal and encourages strong spring growth.

Water regularly during the first year, especially in dry periods. For bare-root trees, soak roots before planting. Add mulch in spring to retain moisture and nourish roots.
