Flowering
'Malus Royalty' is a stunning purple-leaved crab apple tree, perfect for smaller gardens. It thrives in a variety of soil types, including clay, and is especially tolerant of urban pollution. To encourage the best display of its deep crimson-magenta flowers in spring, plant it in a sunny position. This ornamental tree offers year-round beauty: the purple leaves turn red in autumn before falling, while small, dark red-purple fruits ripen to black, providing food for birds throughout the winter months. In addition, *Malus Royalty* is self-fertile, making it an excellent pollinator for domestic apple trees.
Ensure good pollination by selecting fruit trees from the same or adjacent flowering groups.
How To Grow
To grow crab apple trees, select a sunny location with rich, well-drained soil. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and plant the tree at its original depth, ensuring good root contact with the soil. Space trees 3-4m apart for healthy growth. Water well after planting and apply mulch around the base to keep moisture in and weeds out. In late winter or early spring, prune to remove dead or overcrowded branches. Fertilise in early spring to support blossoms and fruiting, and water during dry periods, especially in the first few years.
Guide To Plant Sizes
Our ornamental trees arrive either as potted plants or bare-root trees, carefully selected for your garden. Here’s what to expect:
Potted Trees: Your tree will arrive potted, ready for planting. If you can't plant immediately, place the pot outdoors in a sheltered spot and water regularly to keep the soil moist.
Bare-Root Trees: Delivered during autumn or winter when ready for planting. If planting is delayed, keep the roots moist by covering them in soil in a cool location. Aim to plant within seven days of delivery.
Planting Tips:
Seasonal Care: Plant hardy trees throughout the year, avoiding extremes. During winter, plants may arrive dormant or bare-root with no leaves. This is normal and encourages strong spring growth.
Water regularly during the first year, especially in dry periods. For bare-root trees, soak roots before planting. Add mulch in spring to retain moisture and nourish roots.
