Flowering
With its striking white bark, weeping branches and triangular leaves that shimmer in the wind, the silver birch (Betula pendula) is one of our most elegant and graceful native trees. The leaves turn a warm buttery yellow in autumn, and the white bark adds interest to the garden through winter. Long yellow-brown catkins appear on bare branches in spring.
Silver birches are relatively fast-growing (approximately 50cm a year), and make beautiful specimen trees in a large garden. The white bark is most noticeable on young trees.
How To Grow
Plant birch trees in a sunny to partly shaded spot with well-drained soil, avoiding areas with strong winds. Water regularly during the first year, especially in dry periods, to establish the root system. Prune in late winter to shape or remove any dead or damaged branches. Adding a mulch layer in spring helps to conserve moisture and keep roots cool. Once established, birch trees are hardy and relatively low-maintenance, adding beauty to any landscape with their striking white bark and graceful shape.
Guide To Plant Sizes
Our ornamental trees arrive either as potted plants or bare-root trees, carefully selected for your garden. Here’s what to expect:
Potted Trees: Your tree will arrive potted, ready for planting. If you can't plant immediately, place the pot outdoors in a sheltered spot and water regularly to keep the soil moist.
Bare-Root Trees: Delivered during autumn or winter when ready for planting. If planting is delayed, keep the roots moist by covering them in soil in a cool location. Aim to plant within seven days of delivery.
Planting Tips:
Seasonal Care: Plant hardy trees throughout the year, avoiding extremes. During winter, plants may arrive dormant or bare-root with no leaves. This is normal and encourages strong spring growth.
Water regularly during the first year, especially in dry periods. For bare-root trees, soak roots before planting. Add mulch in spring to retain moisture and nourish roots.
